Nepalis going abroad for employment opportunities, currently concentrated mostly around the Gulf region and Malaysia, will soon have the chance to go to Europe and the US as well.

The Foreign Employment Promotion Board has identified these regions as for foreign employment. The board has already developed an action plan to send Nepali workers to the developed countries, it says.

“The process of sending Nepali workers to developed countries has already begun and an action plan is currently in the final phases of completion,” the board’s Executive Director Raghu Raj Kafle, says.

This is an effort to replace comparatively hazardous and less-paying jobs in the Gulf with higher-paying and less risky jobs in the developed countries, Kafle says.
Though Nepal has approved 109 countries for foreign employment, Nepali workers are currently going to only 25 of them with more than 90 percent of Nepali labourers going to Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE and Kuwait.

The number of Nepali workers going for work in Europe with official labour department permits is only one percent. The highest numbers are in Cyprus, followed by the US, the UK and Germany.

The majority of those going to Europe for work have technical education — like doctors, engineers, nurse and overseers, Badri Bahadur Karki, the spokesperson for the Department of Labour, says.

Sectors that Nepali workers can find work in Europe following a short training include agriculture, manufacturing, hospitality, plumbing and wiring, Karki adds.
